I'm back! Three weeks and 6500 miles driven. All I have to do now is hope for one or two photos that do the trip justice.
Another from the disused, almost secret, abandoned American base at Gournes (Γούρνες) Crete. A part of the complex that I had never entered. I thought it was where they generated the power for the base, but, I have since been put right by my good friend Roy in Nebraska, he served there for many years and informs me that the base took power from the Greeks and this was in case they lost Greek power. In my experience this was probably happening all the time at certain times of the year! Much of the equipment had been removed but the very heavy stuff, although stripped of wire etc, was still there. Fortunately, this place hadn't been used as a toilet like most places here, but, as you can see it has its own set of hazards. Not the place to be wandering backwards with a camera in hand. Anyway here is an aerial view. You can clearly see the masts in the centre of the photo and the remainder of the base surrounding it.
Kathy, Im lost, I said, though I knew she was sleeping
I'm empty and aching and I don't know why
Counting the cars on the new jersey turnpike
They've all gone to look for America
All gone to look for America
All gone to look for America
